RF amplifiers almost (!) always do more harm than good, as they amplifiy both signal and noise.
The best thing about a dipole, though, is that if you have some old school 300-ohm twinlead TV antenna wire (I think Radio Shack might still carry this, even in their stores!) you can 1) make your own hyper-cheaply and 2) tune it, if you wish, to the station(s) you are most interested in. For example, I believe one of the links I posted before gives the formula and suggests an arm length for the "below 92 MHz" noncommercial stations (generally the best sonically and nowadays also for program content in many markets).
