In fact, the simple T-shaped dipole is about the best you can do indoors. The rabbit ear is essentially a dipole just like the ultra-cheap antenna.I would, however, like to amplify (sorry!) a bit.
The rabbit ears are tuneable (which is a very good thing) but a bit hard to get 'up high' where they'll do best for you. You'll most likely get best results witht the two 'ears' 180 degrees apart. The cheap twinlead dipole can be improved by 'rolling your own' if you have access to some fairly good quality 300-ohm twinlead. In this case, you may want to tune it to the region of the spectrum (band) you listen to most (often below 92 MHz for 'audiophiles'). The tunng equation is (as the math textbooks might say) straightforward.
