Receiving AM signals from the "air" with nothing more than a tuned coil and a detector diode is magic.
Heck, DXing AM (or SW) on a cold, dark winter night on a nice superheterodyne receiver (modern or very vintage) is plenty magic, too!

I think I'll post a gratuitous photo of a low-end/mediocre (but adorable) general coverage radio.
