Boston is located on the coast, that's why they could hold that infamous "tea party" there. ;^)

My friends in RI lived within 1/4 mile of the coast. The distance to Boston is about 60 miles with no real land obstructions.

I live about 100 miles from Los Angeles but due to the curvature of the coast line most of that is over water. It helps that I'm within one mile of the coast with no elevated land in between. I use a homemade vertical extension antenna indoors and am able to receive a few LA FM stations in stereo even at that distance.

But my experience with FM is twofold. One, the construction of more tall buildings, towers, etc. create reflections, along with all the additional RF interference. Two, the quality and variety of FM programming has deteriorated over at least the past 20 years. Back in the late '60s and throughout the '70s FM was a wonderful music source.
