The EF86 could substitute for the first 12AX7 in the RCA passive phono preamp. If the plate resistor was made slightly lower (the original is 100K), I believe little or no change would be required to the RIAA components. The unused half of the 12AX7 could be used in that case as a cathode follower to reduce output impedance. I don't know if anyone has published such a design.
