Agreed. However, the basic CD format is really not bad at all. It's just the production. I have a number of wonderfully recorded CD's made in the last decade. Stuff on David Grisman's Acoustic Disc label comes to mind. Then my kids will bring home some pop music and it makes my reference grade sound system sound like a big boom box. Other recent pop music is really well recorded. Go figure. Now everyone is listening to compressed music. Who cares if you can put 15 whole albums on a memory device the size of a bic lighter or even a postage stamp if it sounds like the audio equivalent of a low grade jpeg.... Now a hard drive coupled to a really good DAC with a tubed, fully balanced output stage, now that is intriguing....
