the reason they reportedly work so well as drivers in SE amps is actually due to their high distortion (relative to triodes in general) which cancels with some of the distortion produced by the load on the OP tube. I say this because I've observed (measured and heard) a similar improvement by biasing a triode driver to a less linear region through reduced current. One day I'll try it and take some measurements to prove or discount the theory.Rgds,
