Hi Allen,I agree with your LM317 conclusions. It's not good used directly in the audio path. I have, however, used it under a cascode of a BJT or FET (or triode) with good effect. The upper device multiplies and defines the high Z characteristics out to high frequencies, while the LM317 nicely sets a fairly precise and relatively low tempco current. Also I've used the LM317 under a big bypass cap in cathode bias circuits. Either way something else must hide the LM317's intrinsic poor sound quality while taking advantage of this cheap, fairly precise (at DC) current generator.
