I am hoping to adjust the azimuth for the playback-only side of a Sony TC-WE475. I need to do this to convert some valuable old recordings. For some of these the sound is adversely affected unless I can match the head-height by which they were recorded. My only previous experience with this was a long time ago, on a Panasonic deck made in the 1970s. In that old deck the azimuth was adjusted by turning a single screw - and the casing came with a hole that provided access to that screw.
My new deck doesn't seem to come with any easy access. Through an opening I drilled out of the door, I see at least four screws around the head. Two torx screws project up on either side of the head, and two small Phillips screws are set back, underneath the head.
Viewing from the side through the opened door, those Phillips screws aren't visible, so I can't tell what they are attached to. But I can see the Torx screws are each attached with a spring to a post on either side of the head and are fixed in place with locking compound. And it looks like a notch in each post helps keep the tape alligned with the head.
Does it make sense that the azimuth would be adjusted by moving the tape while the head remains stationary, instead of the other way around, using two screws instead of one?
If there are two screws to turn, doesn't that make adjusting the azimuth more difficult?
I didn't see an easy way to remove the door, and it is not easy to see much through the hole I made in it. Is there a diagram or photo somewhere of this kind of head assembly, one that would help me figure out what I am looking at?
Is there a nondestructive way to take the door off?
Please help. I am grateful for any advice.
Thanks!
