There are machines with two sets of playback heads; both 1/4 track and 1/2 track/ The OTARI MX5050. It has two playback heads and a switch. There are more 1/4 track pre-recorded tapes out there being recycled. The 2 track era was relatively short lived unless you're talking about Doc B's recent re-entry. You can't play 1/4 track tapes on a 2 track play back head. But you can play 2 track tapes on a 1/4 track playback head. Ray
