Technical and speculative discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

There is really no such thing

Technically a 100W transformer will work with a 100W load, but all these numbers will not tell you how it will sound.

Generally you want the step down transformer be much bigger than one in the unit. But how much bigger? It depends on the size and power of your load.

If your load is moderate, say, 200W, then getting a 2000VA tranny is easy, and should be considered.

However, things change when loads get heavy. If your power amp is rated 300W per channel, its full power draw could be as high as 2000vA or even higher. Good luck finding (and moving around) a 20kW unit. But the truth is your power amp will never produce full power on both channels in a sustained way. So you can get away with a smaller part.

But all this is really unimportant. As I said, no one will be able to predict how the transformer will affect your sound. Just because it is big doesn't mean it will be transparent - although it has better chance.
