In most cases it would be OK...

It depends a bit on the device being plugged in to it. If it's using a linear power supply you're probably fine. If it's using a switching power supply, you make be taking a risk.

The best thing would likely be to just open it up and switch the hot and neutral wires to the output, which "shouldn't" be that difficult.
