is that there is so much misinformation in the commercial audio press regarding balanced vs single-ended designs. Reviewers almost always fail to disclose whether an amplifier or preamplifier uses a truly balanced circuit or merely has a stage at the output side to convert the SE signal into balanced mode so the unit will accept an XLR connector. (I actually wonder whether many of them would know the difference.) The latter types of gear will almost always sound better in SE mode, because one is thereby bypassing an additional active stage at the output. Moreover, there are gurus in the audio press corps and among manufacturers who will tell you point blank that balanced designs are no good because the signal has to travel thru "too many parts" and "too much wiring". (This comment was actually made to me by a wire maker who is also an EE. His company does not make any balanced ICs as a result of his thinking.) So, in the first place, is the Parasound amplifier truly a balanced design?
