Parasound JC1 amp: Balanced design?

I have found that most amplifiers sound best when run as they were designed - Fully balanced amps sound best when run in balanced mode and single ended amps run single ended. The Stereophile review was conducted single ended. Does this make a difference and if so, in what way. If John Curl responds, perhaps we could get a glimpse into his ideas on the balanced vs. unbalanced question.
