It isn't the connector that will get you. It is the impedance change that will. RCAs almost always indicate high impedence and XLRs low impedance.A source that is high impedance isn't going to like the 600 ohm load that the XLR jack has on the amp. Most times the bass will roll off quite nicely. I have seen 20 db of roll off at 20 Hz due to impedance mismatches. A source that is expecting a 600 ohm load can be an issue as well unless you terminate it with a 600 ohm load.
My advice is to buy some new cables and don't change from RCA to XLR from one end of the cable to the other.
