An external damping factor of 10 or 20 has virtually NO impact in any competently designed speaker, as the actual damping is controlled by the voice coil and or ribbon DCR. One possible cause could be a highly reactive crossover design that leads to severe interactions with the amplifier.
Of course, more than once I have heard audiophiles claim a system with severely obvious compression posessed "great dynamics". So one would have to know more about the context to to give a reliable conclusion on the matter.
But again, in current controlled devices (electrodynmaic speakers of ANY KIND) the presence of high damping factor amplifier maximises distortion and compression, however insufficient extrenal "damping" leads to problems with piss poor speaker designs that inherently rely on external damping to control mechanical resonances.
