Let's get back to basics. The original reason 'balanced' was used, was with long cables. Long cables tend to pick up hum from magnetic sources, like transformers in the area. Balanced cables would pick up the hum, EQUALLY, on both leads, and also in the same phase on both leads. The transformer on the receiving end would subtract the signals and cancel the hum. This was done by the phone company and later, by sound film studios in the '30's.
Today, balanced operation MIGHT help remove CM (like hum and more) pickup on cables, that cannot be easily be shielded out by a simple copper covering. This is the essence of balanced mode operation. In many cases, single ended is both quieter and better performing.
