Re: Directional beams refocus sound science--(Long)

Hi All

I read an article in the N.Y. Times some time back about this company, and any mention of concern for the effects of exposure to high frequency sound was conspicuously absent. I asumed that the author just did'nt know the right questions to ask. This technique is not new, although Woody seems to have refined it to a new level. Someone was trying to market a sound system for art museums in the 70's or 80's where you would hear only commentary on the painting you were standing in front of. This never seemed to have cought on as most of the museums rent headpnones. In the article Woody seemed convinced that this technique would revolutionize rock concert sound, which seemed unlikely in view of the high Dbl's needed in this kind of venue, and the resultant amount of high frequency energy needed to get the job done. Woody seemed frustrated at his efforts to get any of the big guys to buy his ideas. The author of the article did talk to someone at the top at JBL I think, who did find the demonstration interesting, but commented that it had no bass. I would be interested in hearing a demonstration, but I have the feeling this is just an interesting audio parlor trick. Now the nuissnce potential for this technology is tremendous: a pop machine you are walking past says "Buy a coke" inside your head! Woody also mentioned that his company has contracts with the military, and was quite aware of the harmfull effects of this technology when sold as a weapon. God help us!

Paul
