Technical and speculative discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Agree with you.. but there is more....

Hi there,

"I've found *generally speaking* that warmth, depth
increase by favoring low frequencies. I've found speed, image
definition, air, dynamics increase by favoring hi frequencies."

Your quote above was what I had experinced several years ago when I was toying around with sub-woofer. I agree with you on this.

But what I heard when I had several Black Gates in my phono stage, was a big improvement with the bass. Everything seems quicker, tighter and faster - less bass, but good quality stop/start bass. The depth of the sound stage foreshorthened - sort of like SS.

Based on the above experience, improving bass transient and control lead to less depth and warmth - tube and SS common properties. Favoring low frequency may not be the answer to my earlier comments. Fatter bass do however improves the perception of depth though.

Perhaps I am just getting greedy here. I want the best out of each component without compromise. Having said all these, my built from scratch effort of the EAR phono stage with these exotic components is far superior to the mass production unit I have in hand, in whatever incarnation that I have been trying lately.

Circuitry is fine and I am not facing a big hurdle. In fact, I am very much in control of the type of sound I want - with the right compromise of course - want SS bass, tube mids and highs. I am just putting forward a "think piece" if you like.

Thanks for your input.

Cheers
