You can but you have to carefully adjust the amount and positioning since the overall sound of the dipoles depends on that rear reflection back into the listening area. If you put absorbtion materials behind them, you do not want to change the tonal balance of the reflection too much. I'd go about it incrementally with multiple small panels added one at a time.

P.S.: I did this with a pair of Apogees and found it all too easy to put a blanket (figuratively) on their sound.
