Here's my method...

...I start at about thirds with the speaker 30% from the front wall and the listening spot in 30% from the back wall. Then I move the speakers around side to side and back and forth until I get a rough idea of where I like them.

First I listen for best bass response - detailed, defined and extended with the ability to separate a couple of bass instruments playing at the same time.

Next I listen for overall best tonality and imaging. This requires not only positioning the speakers at the right spot, but getting toe-in correct as well.

So once I have a rough estimation of where the speakers sound best, I put long strips of masking tape along the front and inside edges of the speaker and mark it off in 1" increments.

First I move the speakers along these grids in 4" to 6" increments and then finally, in smaller 1" increments until I get them where further movement makes no more improvement. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks with lots of listening in between movements.
