All rooms need bass traps to flatten the response and reduce low frequency ringing. Without bass traps the flattest speakers in the world will still vary by 30 dB or even more below 300 Hz. Below is a graph showing a low frequency response that is absolutely typical for all rooms. Note the peak/dip pair at 110 and 122 Hz where the response varies a staggering 32 dB across a range smaller than one musical whole step.

The "ping" you hear is caused by echoes bouncing repeatedly between large areas of bare parallel wall. So the goal is to treat the walls, but not completely. I favor a stripes pattern or checkerboard. Even covering 20 percent of the bare surface will make a very big improvement.
