For a while I considered replacing the carpet in my living room home with hardwood. As an experiment, to hear what the change would sound like, I laid pieces of thick cardboard all over the floor. So you could try that, or use thin 2x4 foot panels made of plywood or Masonite. Home Depot sells those precut, and they're easy to move around and stow away.
