RE: More Testing Of Tubes (Mastersound) Vs Transistors (Jungson)

Hi Tubeguy,

If I understand your post it sounds to me that you have discovered the difference between so called "soft" clipping as compared to "hard" clipping.

I suspect these dynamics problems you percieved with the SS amp is where it hits the wall. This is exactly why proponents of SS gear will always tell you to size your amp such that at max listening levels you still do not clip, and why SS people typically have amps with huge power ratings, and also why tube guys can get away with less.

It's like diesels vs gasoline cars...just different. Both can be good. Tubes apparently sound better than SS when overdriven. I think you are now seeing what a SS amp has to offer as long as you can keep it from clipping. One could make an argument why each one has it's strengths and weaknesses.

I suggest you get your hands on an even more powerful SS amp. You may like it even more. I bet you'd even be quite shocked what a cheapo fanless pro amp could offer if you could lower yourself long enough to try a real contender.

About all your questions at the end of your post...there is a bad apple in every barrel, please don't write off an entire subset of society based on the bad behavior of a small group of outliers.
