I don't know all of Bob's "secrets" but I do know that he was as careful to not use too large of a gauge as he was to not use too small. If I recall correctly my speaker wire is 18 gauge dead soft silver rod. This sounds small to me since I'm using 700W monoblock amps into 92dB efficient speakers, but the speaker wires don't get warm at any volume I can stand :) He claimed that not burning them in for at least a month would leave them quite unlistenable and also that cryo'ing them was counter productive (which sort of makes sense since he likes dead soft silver.)

Also he was vary careful with the direction of each conductor, tho I doubt seriously that this would affect the issues you are talking about.
