I think that more than the exact type of recorder, you'd have better luck focussing on: mic type (yes probably a large diaphram condensor for the overall), mic position (probably just a single overhead, maybe a kick mic?), and compression which is definately a part of the fifties drum sound.Then there is also the key matter of the recording studio space--these drums weren't recorded in drum booths, they played in often large somewhat reflective rooms, which contributes a lot to the sound.
And of course...the sounds of the INSTRUMENTS themselves. Drums in the 1950s sounded different than new drums today. Get yourself some of the simulated cowhide heads which will help get that vintage sound. Cymbals? Darker rides? lighter high-hats? Not sure how to gauge that one.
