Re: Need advice on small home recording equipment..

There is a host of different software packages avaliable to do this and sound cards. Soundcards are obsoleteing themselves about once a week. It's important to stay with one interface. I would go firewire. A firewire interface card is inexpensive. Then you need to settle on the number of tracks. If he has a MAC then I would look at Mark of the Unicorn for interfaces. If it's a PC I would look to either M audio or RME. Software wise; Sony Vegas Video or if he is more into music compostion then Cakewalk-Sonar. Vegas Video is a video editing software and you might think you don't want to do video editing but this allows for SMPTE or MIDI time code signatures to be burned in as video as time references. It has an unlimited number of tracks but no music notion. The companion sound Sony software is SOUNDFORGE but you can only work on two tracks at a time. These when finished can be transferred to Vegas. As to soundcards I would look at Mark of the Unicorn, M-Audio or RME and I would get a sound card that has it's own outboard power supply and breakout box. You don't want to power the mic preamps from the computer switching power supply ideally but that's a more professional issue than anateur. You need to find a local dealer of sound equipment that you can trust and will hopefully let you try stuff on approval. You'll also have interface problems and you need to find a dealer who can service those problems on your local basis. I wouldn't try and do it by mail order! I'm not a dealer and I don't sell this stuff or own stock in these companies. Good luck! Ray
