Re: put more money into mic, or mic-pre?

Giving advice is always tough cuz there may not be a right and wrong answer. From a starting position I would always want to sink my resources into the best mic I could afford. I haven't heard the Rode product so can't comment, but it seems like an good honest product. Have you heard what you settled on or are you deciding based on price and specs? If you can, hear what you are going to sink $ into. How good is the mic-pre in your mixer? It is always tough to call but some are better than others. The transducer ( microphone ) is what makes or breaks it because this is the "thing" that changes the pressure waves into electrical analog. If you can't afford to buy everything you want right now, and few can, decide what is really important and focus on that. I don't want to negate the mic-pre but first things first. I would strongly consider getting the best microphone you can with your $ now and worry about the next step later. The first mic I bought ( 1981 ?) was an AKG C451 E comb.
It was tough to come up with the $ at the time. Later I got another from the same batch for a stereo pair. I don't regret that first purchase in the least. That microphone was so good, compared to what I might have purchased to "get by" I bought it and never looked back.
Make sure you shop around and take notes on price. Don't be afraid of "B" stock if you know your dealer. Often dealers are offered stock that went to shows where the boxes were opened or something similar and the product cannot then be sold as new. It is fully warranted as new if sold from an authorized reseller. There are an amazing number of microphone choices out there to choose from, and you don't have to spend multi kilo dollars to get good sound. I hope this little ramble helps.
