copy the RCA microphone preamp using 12AY7. K & K audio has a kit for this using Lundahl transformers if you don't want to roll your own. The RCA circuit is still very much a valid good design. Even the original with updates to power supply ( don't use electrolytics anywhere, except perhaps for Black Gate ) is just wonderful good. Have fun!
