a) It depends on the room. Having little or no room in the equation was the design intent of near fields. At that distance, you better have a room that's made to be flat or you won't get flat in your ears. If that's not a problem for you, I understand, but if its your goal.... then whatever they were designed for is what will work.b) Next, most monitors were designed to be listened to at both a certain distance, and for stereo field and dispersion, a certain angle. Also, frequencies do not all propegate with the same loss per distance because air does not resist all frequencies equally. So, its back to: do you want flat or not.. and what did the designers intend?
