For simple PCI cards, I recommend the Lynx 22, RME DigiPAD or E-MU 1212m. While I have not directly compared them, they always get the best comments that I've seen. I own the RME and it is very good. If I was to upgrade, I'd go with the Lynx. I don't know how the 1212m compares to the RME, but I think the Lynx card will be better than both.As far as Firewire goes, these get the most recommendations for highest quality sound. The Aurora is new, but based on Lynx Studio's reputation with their Lynx2 cards, it should be great sounding.

I am less clear on the best USB solutions. Search the PC Audio Asylum for many discussions on this, mostly about playback.
