Using a PCI soundcard in an external case with laptop....

is it possible to use a good PCI sound card in an external case via firewire or USB, just like a DVD drive? Just wonder as it would solve a lot of my problems trying to get a high quality device ie at least 24/96. Many of the options I am looking at m-box and even mini-me will only record up to 24/48. I would like 24/96. I wish Apogee would upgrade the mini me's USB capability.
