Is full, accurate sound possible just 3' from the monitors?

Hi:
I was wondering if people think it is possible to hear reasonably full range, accurate sound if seated just 3 feet from your monitors? Are there any speakers which excel at this? What typical eq adjustments must be made? Can the music sound the same from 3' as it will from 'normal' distances?
