The old Fenders have great low end response (one of the things that give them their characteristic warm punchy clean tone), and I know a few who use them for bass, keyboard, pedal steel etc. In a studio situation they are very versatile, and should be good for bass at small live gigs. The open back cabinet will won't control excursion of the 15 as well as the sealed bass cabs, but if you watch the volume it should work well.
