Christmas present - inexpensive mixer for my kid -- Help!

Hi all,
My son wants a mixer to hook up to his computer. He is a musician and wants to have more level control options than his cheap sound card can give him. I would like to spend somewhere between $100-200, and I may consider a new sound card (perhaps a USB?)if that would be a better option
