hard knee/ soft knee

Can someone tell me the difference in this? From what I read it is only apparent near the threshold. Will only be noticeable at the times when it's above and then below the threshold. Is this correct? If I have it set to a low threshold and a low compression ratio to give around 15db of gain reduction (this is on mixed material). If I want a "compressed" sound should I look for a compressor with hard knee compression? It sounded like (from what I read) a soft knee will yeild a more not compressed sound even if it is compressed quite a bit.

Also, I never get any notifications sent to me. I do check the box below but never know if someone responds. (any ideas??)

Thanks
