Hey folksI need some gear for myself. I researched this a few months back, but now I'm ready to actually buy equipment (and Hi-MD is out!!).
So I was thinking a Shure FP23 or FP24; they have a lot of great field mixers...

Probably a Sennheiser shotgun mic or something that can change capsules (any suggestions...what do you use?). Hi-MD looks like a great alternative to DAT. You can record directly to uncompressed PCM from what I understand, transferring isn't a problem (USB to PC), and media capacities are huge these days. Anyone read about or actually use a Hi-MD recorder for location sound? If not, do I understand that DAT is the best alternative?
For the Hi-MD it just looks like it has a little "mini-jack" mic-in and line-in...do I need some sort of XLR--->mini-jack cable for this to work properly?
If you haven't heard about the Hi-MD format you should read this FAQ: http://minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html
Thanks for your ideas!
