Re: Ampex 300-4 question?

Ray,
Wow that is some really good information since this is my first exposure to tape. Thank you very much!

I started tonight on the Front Panel restoration on one of the 351 pres. Its coming along really good. This unit is a 4 track 1/2" unit and John French said he could either restore the heads for $300-$400 or if interested replace with a custom built 2 track 1/2" for roughly $2k. Wow that is a lot, but my uses as a 4 track recorder are very minimal since I do mostly digital recording and only want tape for stereo mastering. Have you ever heard of anyone doing this to a 300-4 ...that is convert it to a 2 track 1/2"? I've heard the transport is not very stable and were quickly replaced when the 350's came out......I just need something to bounce to tape for mastering. It may be to my advantage to keep it as a complete unit and sell and purchase a more modern 2 channel 1/2" (ATR?) than to put a lot of $ into something that is more or less for a collector....thoughts..opinion...hatemail..welcome...

Any idea as to it current value?

Best Regards,

Theron D
