It's really a matter of horses for courses!
If you need to address more permanent problems like flattening response curves or dealing with a pesky resonance I would go with the parametric.
If you just want to cut or boost the odd frequency from song to song a graphic is much more convenient because it is so much more visual and faster in its use.
As an example the tweeter part of my Tannoys needs a shallow but wide notch around 2.5kHz and a boost of about 6dB/oct from 5kHz (very much like modern constant directivity horns) to produce a flat response. My parametric does that using only two filter bands where a 1/3oct graphic would use 3 for the notch and a further 5 for the boost! On the other hand it took a while to dial in properly (an Analyzer helps here no end) since you have to think about which center frequency you want to boost or cut, by how much and how wide a frequency band you want to affect and there is no visual help from the unit itself as there is with a graphic (see above).
The easiest way to use a parametric for sound 'enhancing' works like this:
Say you want to boost something first you set the Q to narrow and apply a lot (too much) boost, play with the frequency control until you're in the middle of the bit you want to boost. Now reduce the boost to acceptable levels and play with Q control until your happy. You may have to readjust any setting when you get close to what you want.Whichever type of eq is better suited to your needs is up to you but the ones to go for are made by Klark Teknik, not cheap but a serviced s/h unit will still outperform anything else on the market. They make both types, single (mono) or dual channel (stereo).
TLAudio make some tube parametrics which adds a tube drive control if you really want to be 'artistic' with your sound tweaking.Hope this helps at all...
