At $250 I think the Touch is great value. Its strength, I think, is the ability to have quick access to your music. Since buying it I've discovered many great tracks and artists, using Random Play, on compilation discs I had neglected previously.
There is also the ability to upgrade in reasonably cheap steps. For example adding a linear power supply, or a jitter reducing interface such as the Firestone Bravo. Many mods such as Soundcheck's are reputed to help.
I do believe a little work is required to get it to a good cd player standard, but this is achievable.
It cleared my living room of a 1000+ cds, though this has infuriated my three year old daughter who used to enjoy swapping the discs and cases.
