I bought a Zyxel 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch for a few reasons.
- I wanted a compact switch with two rows of 8-ports. Most are one row of 16-ports making them very long. Prefer metal, some are plastic.
- LED indicators needed to be on the same side as the switch ports with the power input on the opposite side.
- Wanted a switch with internal power supply that plugs directly into 120-VAC eliminating the need for a wall wart power supply.
Mine is similar to this one but not exactly:
The cable modem / router / wifi combo is located near the opposite wall on the other side of the main HVAC duct running through the ceiling. That wall has a smaller metal box with an 8-port switch, CAT6 cables, RG6 coax cables and splitters. Two ports in that 8-port switch accommodate two runs of CAT6 over the HVAC duct and into the metal box in my post.
