are state-of-the-art and improve in every way over hardware implementations inside most DACs. Where you really enjoy the benefit is with a DAC that you can bypass the internal upsampling and filters. In that case HQPlayer provides a significant step up in sound quality. I also believe that HQPlayer sounds better when using convolution, because the modulators are higher quality even when outputting 24/192 as I do. Roon has improved a lot and does offer great sound right now, but for the right set-ups, HQPlayer is still king of the hill. Particularly for high-rate DSD upsampling using the latest EC modulators which requires quite a bit of horsepower to implement but is far beyond silicon implementations.
