You're attributing the wrong factor...

I had a Squeezebox and used LMS for years. When I switched to a Node 2 and BluOS, I could not believe how much better it was than LMS. I'll never go back to LMS.

The limitation was the Squeezebox hardware, not the server software which is supported across multiple operating systems. While the Touch player was a game changer ten years ago, but far better is available today using multiple open system platforms (RPi, SOtM, ultraRendu, etc.) running Squeezelite. And with ongoing development, supports all the major streaming services. I run Qobuz Studio with mine.

LMS runs natively on a Synology NAS which provides a managed high throughput environment. I also use it for high resolution video with Roku players.
