A surface scan every few months is a good idea. On Windows you can do this with SpeedFan which accesses the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics capability in modern disk drives. If you do a complete surface scan you will detect all marginal sectors and recover any data before it gets lost, or more importantly the error counters can give an indication of a failing drive before it's too late. Similar S.M.A.R.T. software is available on the command line on Linux systems.
