So my girlfriend came over last night, sat down in front of the stereo and--unprompted--said that it sounded better for some reason. When I asked her to elaborate, she said it wasn't buzzing!
I jumped up and down for joy because it means a) I wasn't just convincing myself that the effect was real and b) it must be a relatively large effect--girlfriend has been to one too many rock concerts, so she doesn't exactly have sensitive hearing.
