I would like to thank everybody for the support I have received here on the ASOG regarding the speaker impedance autoformers I call the ZEROs.My initial fears of being called the one who is simply adding transformers to output-transformer-less amplifiers has faded, since I now have numerous positive reports from non-OTL users. The benefits of a higher impedance speaker has proved itself on many P-P, SET, and even Solid State amplifiers. The ZEROs Field Report (testimonials) document has now grown to 18 pages long and shows that the ZEROs are a low impedance speaker fix!
The ZEROs have been changed (improved), but nothing is changed about the autoformer itself. Only the leads coming out of the autoformer are different:-The GREEN center tap lead has been removed (no one ever used it).
-The leads have been changed to Teflon insulated silver coated copper.
-All leads are now 5 feet long for a 10 foot total span.
-The instructions are different (flip-flopped). Instead of fixing the GRAY/BROWN leads to the amplifier and using different leads on the speaker to achieve different multiplication factors, I now tell users to fix the WHITE/BLACK leads to the speaker and use two of the four remaining leads to select the multiplying factor at the amplifier end. Of course the ZEROs may still be used as originally described if wanted (backwards compatible).
-With this new configuration 2x, 3x (actually2.9x), and 4x multiplying factors are available. Of course the ZEROs may still be used as originally described if wanted to get the original factors.
-Now that the speakers are "fixed" on the WHITE/BLACK pair, I have doubled up the WHITE/BLACK leads to enable Bi-Wiring from the ZERO to the speaker (the low impedance side where Bi-Wiring is useful).
The new ZEROs are available in 3 different forms:
1) DIY-ZEROs
For the Do-it-Yourself guys, I will still offer the ZEROs in their "raw" form. These will be like the original ZERO yet will have 5 foot long Teflon insulated, silver coated copper leads for a 10 foot total span from amp to speaker. There is two WHITE/BLACK pairs for bi-wiring from the ZERO to the speaker. Cost of the DIY-ZEROs = $433 per pair. The extra 50 bucks covers the cost of the new Teflon insulated silver coated copper leads. I am willing to upgrade from the original ZEROs for $100. Just send them in (even with shortened leads) along with a check for $100. I will ship you a new pair of DIY-ZEROs.
2) ZERO-Cables
The idea here is the Autoformers come with speaker cables attached to them, called ZERO-Cables. The ZERO-Cable directly connects the amp to the speaker, and replaces your existing speaker cables while multiplying the speakers impedance. Use them in place of your existing speaker cables.-High quality speaker cable runs (Teflon insulated silver coated copper) that are made to order (custom length).
-Bi-wired to the speaker.
-Offer only 2X, 3X, and 4X settings.
-Gold plated spade ends on all connections.
My costs and labor jump up, but this will make for a much needed refinement the ZEROs truly deserve.
Price per pair will vary accordingly to total cable length for the new ZERO-Cables:
4 feet from amp to speaker = $633
6 feet from amp to speaker = $683
8 feet from amp to speaker = $733
10 feet from amp to speaker = $783
3) ZERO-Box
A third version will be offered in a beautiful hand crafted lacquer finished solid cherry wooden box with the connections available on Cardas binding posts that allow you to use your favorite speaker cables. Cost for the new ZERO-Boxes = $850 per pair. I sold out of the first batch of these before I even announced them. I now have more available again. These of course require a second short pair of speaker cables, but I have been able to provide this for only $50 if you don't have an extra set around.
-or-
Just send to me your original ZEROs and I can install them in the lacquer finished solid cherry boxes with Cardas connectors for $400.
-or-
For the DIY guys, I can sell just the pair of finished Cherry boxes for $250. You supply the binding posts and assemble.I have a few Bird's-Eye-Maple boxes with black African Ebony wood accent pieces in the four corners for an extra $100. Mark will be posting a picture of these soon.
You can see them all here: http://www.otlamp.com/tweaks/ps/zero/index.htmlPlease let me know if you have any questions!
