What pre-amplifiers, tts, cartridges, tonearms, CDPs, cables, etc, were these reviewers using, who heard a "lower treble emphasis". Anything in the chain can produce shifts in tonal balance. One thing I can say from personal experience, if these guys (especially the TAS reviewers) were using Nordost spkr wire (because various versions are touted by HP), then that could explain the phenomenon entirely. In my system, with Atma-sphere amps driving Sound Lab ESLs, the Nordost spkr wires (tried Red Dawn and Blue Heaven) made my ears bleed. They were that irritating in the low to mid-treble. The less expensive Nordost wires, e.g., Super Flatline, sounded much better, for example. A theory that could explain the phenomenon is that the Nordost wide, flat wires with side-by-side conductors have a very high characteristic impedance which could cause reflections back to the amp. In my experience, spkr wires with low characteristic Z, no matter how that was achieved, sound best with my combination of amp and spkr.
