I recently acquired a used, virtually mint Shelter 501 MkII to replace a Grado Reference Master. Output is 0.4 mV. The first thing that I noticed is that this relatively low output coupled with my low efficiency speakers (Quad ESL-63) did not allow me to produce volumes sufficient for proper reproduction of symphonic works, even with the volume control turned all the way up. Too bad, as the Shelter is one very nice cartridge. On the bright side, system noise was never, ever noticeable - quite a tribute to the low noise design in my opinion. Thanks, Ralph.I have now sold the Shelter to a fellow ASOG member and have, I believe, acquired a Benz Ruby H (0.8 mV). Those of you with low efficiency speakers might consider a somewhat higher output cartridge than the minimum listed for this preamp.
