What about the old Mark I input stage?

The "old" Mark I input stage has gain to burn with 12AT7s. Keep one 6SN7 as CCS and replace the dual-differential amp and cascode sections with 12AT7s. You can use a little less current and therefore much larger value plate resistors. If you must use pentodes, perhaps you can find one with 12AT7-like characteristics, when used as a triode. Bottlehead makes and sells hole-shrinkers for installing 9-pin sockets in chassis holes created for octal ones. (Of course, you can also make a bracket for that purpose yourself.) I cannot imagine wanting or needing more gain or input sensitivity than one can get from the tried and true Mark I circuit.
