IMHO, the 6SN7s used in the MK II version simply sound much better than the 12AT7s and 12AU7s used in the MK I version. There's a lower noise floor because 6SN7s are generally less microphonic and generate less thermionic noise. The lower gain helps a bit too, since I believe the 12AT7s provide a bit too much gain. All this translates to more detail.

The driver supply in the MK II version is also much better, so again, the noise floor is lessened and the sound is more dynamic.

A MK I can be upgraded to a MK II or even a MK II.2. You may want to consider a MK II upgrade, as opposed to buying a new amplifier.

Only the factory can tell you the history of your serial number. If you pop the bottom cover and take some digital pictures, then send them to me, I can tell you a good deal about the MK I revision status.
